Mama J’s Market is here.
Why it matters: Richmonders can now grab-and-go most of the Mama J’s dishes they know and love, daily.
Driving the news: Mama J’s Market soft opened last week on the corner of Clay and 1st streets, just two doors down from its namesake Southern food restaurant.
- The market will be running a soft opening — as in, expect a limited selection and some empty shelves — until its grand opening on Feb. 1 (timed to coincide with the start of Black History Month).
- We popped in this week to check it out.
On the shelves: Grab-and-go items like blackened catfish, collards, grilled pork chops, seafood salad, baked chicken, wraps, salads and mashed potatoes. Most items are priced well under $15.
- There’s a candy section, pantry and grocery staples, fresh fruit and veggies, and a whole table filled with slices of Mama J’s cake ($6).
Coming soon, the market will add some locally-made items and is asking locals to share what they’d like to see them stocked with, per its Insta…
