City Set to Resume Crackdown on Vape Shops

With Virginia on the verge of legalizing store-bought marijuana for recreational use, Richmond has shuttered dozens of vape shops and convenience stores in a law enforcement operation targeting businesses it suspects of illicitly selling weed along with vapes to minors.

The initiative follows outcry from residents concerned about the spread of retail stores adorned in bright lights, signs and murals for substances promising heady buzzes and smooth flavors.

Richmond Mayor Danny Avula, a practicing pediatrician, announced Operation Vaporize in December, saying the protection of public health and safety, especially for youth, is “non-negotiable.” Authorities say they have also seized drugs and guns from stores, allegedly discovering criminal connections in some cases…
