Veto: Virginia Governor Spanberger stops Fairfax casino bill

TYSONS, Va. — Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger vetoed a bill Thursday that would have made Fairfax County eligible for a casino.

The bill would have shifted the decision-making power from the Commonwealth government back to the local level, where the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors would potentially place the issue before voters.

“Local governing boards should lead on proposed casino development, as has happened in every locality that now has a casino,” said Spanberger in a press release. “But in Fairfax County, the Board of Supervisors has explicitly opposed this legislation, and an overwhelming majority of the General Assembly members who represent Fairfax voted against it.”…
