The Fontana City Council recently adopted a quarterly lien action to address delinquent sewer and solid waste accounts, as well as weed abatement accounts — looking to preserve the city’s financial health by establishing a paper trail of debts with San Bernardino County. This quarter, the lien amount totals $221,475, up from $118,798 last quarter. “These quarterly hearings are part of our ongoing administrative process to safeguard the city’s revenues and ensure the financial health of these essential services,” Deputy Finance Officer Marlene Galvan said. “This is an administrative process and is designed to ensure that unpaid service charges remain recoverable over time.”
According to Galvan, the property owners with delinquent water and sewer accounts were notified through regular billing, mailed lien notices and legal publications. Additionally, residents with weed abatements, she said, had the opportunity to file an appeal.
Between 374 sewer accounts, 96 solid waste accounts and 67 weed abatement accounts, the liens cover approximately $221,000, which Galvan said will be recorded with the San Bernardino County Recorder’s office. According to the staff report, the total accounts for approximately $97,244 in sewer, roughly $49,033 in solid waste and about $75,197 in weed abatement.
