Parts of Southern California and the central United States are under serious heat alerts this week, and the danger is not over yet.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for San Bernardino and Riverside County Valleys, including the Inland Empire, through Wednesday at 8 p.m. Separately, northeast Kansas remains under its own extreme heat warning through this evening, with severe storms also possible as temperatures peak.
Southern California: 108-degree heat through Wednesday
The NWS office in San Diego issued the updated warning early today, calling for dangerously high temperatures in the upper 90s to 108 degrees across the Inland Empire, with overnight lows only dropping into the 70s. That matters because the warm nights give the body little opportunity to recover from the daytime heat, raising the risk of illness considerably overnight and into the following day.
A separate heat advisory is in place for the Riverside County and San Diego County mountains through Thursday at 8 p.m., where temperatures below 5,500 feet are expected to reach into the 90s.
Kansas: Extreme heat with storms on the way
Northeast Kansas faces a different combination of threats today. The NWS in Topeka says an extreme heat warning remains in effect through 7 p.m., with highs expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees and heat index values climbing as high as 109 degrees.
