Tsunami not expected following Magnitude 4.2 California earthquake, warning center says

Following tonight’s seismic activity in Southern California, the region received a reassuring update from the Tsunami Warning Center.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake, occurring 50 miles east of Los Angeles at 19:43 PST on January 24th, triggered a Tsunami Information Statement.

Fortunately, the statement clarified that a tsunami is not expected.

This announcement comes in the wake of a 4.2 magnitude earthquake that struck just 1.24 miles WSW of San Bernardino earlier in the evening. The quake, recorded at 19:43:20, had its epicenter located 2 km WSW of San Bernardino, with a depth of 5.6 miles.

Classified as a 4.2 magnitude earthquake, it was felt throughout Southern California, including densely populated areas such as Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.

Despite the widespread tremors, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries related to the seismic events.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was near San Bernardino, a city in the Inland Empire region.
