This popular German festival is within driving distance of San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Though similar to Oktoberfest, there’s a springtime festival that’s bringing German flare and traditions to Southern California — and it’s within driving distance of San Diego.

Big Bear Lake Maifest, an annual event, is returning to the Big Bear Lake for just four days. On May 17, 24, 25, and 31 the Convention Center will transform into an old German town, an event that’s meant to bid farewell to “Old-Man Winter” and say “hello” to warmer days ahead.

In fact, history shows that origins of Maifest festivals dates back to the 18th century, when villagers and townsfolk celebrated the end of winter and the arrival of spring in true Oktoberfest-like fashion.

As for present day, festivalgoers at Big Bear Lake can enjoy German-style Maibock beers, sizzling bratwursts hot off the grill, homemade sauerkraut, pretzels, warm apple strudels, and more…
