Hopes were high when Mary Martin took over as Director of Riverside County Animal Services, with many expecting meaningful reform after years of criticism aimed at the department’s previous leadership. But according to animal welfare advocate Dan Bolton, those hopes have been dashed.Speaking recently on a local radio show, Bolton criticized Martin for continuing the same controversial policies of mass euthanasia that plagued the department under former director Erin Gettis.“Rescue groups are begging her to stop the daily killing of healthy, adoptable animals,” Bolton said. “And all they get in return is PR fluff and vague promises.”According to Bolton, Martin has turned down repeated requests from animal rescuers to delay euthanasia so they can rehome the animals. Instead, she reportedly claims a lack of space leaves the department no choice.
