Redlands teachers’ union files labor complaint against school district

The Redlands Teacher Association (RTA) filed an unfair labor practice charge on Aug. 22 against the Redlands Unified School District (RUSD) in response to the recently approved flag policy, which restricts classroom displays to the American and California state flags. Exceptions include school championship flags, banners or pennants from colleges and universities, and student club materials, which may be displayed during club events or meetings.

In a statement, RTA President Stephen Caperton said, “To date, the district has refused to negotiate the substance of the policy and has only allowed negotiations regarding the impacts and effects that the policy will have on members. This refusal to bargain with the language of the policy denies every RTA member their right to negotiate, guaranteed under the law.”
