Riverside County Cracking Down on “Move Over Law” to Protect Roadside Workers

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is increasing enforcement of the Move Over Law, reminding drivers that when they see flashing lights on the side of the road, they must create extra space for roadside workers. The law, in effect nationwide, is designed to protect law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, tow truck operators, and roadway crews who face dangerous conditions while working near traffic.Under the law, when approaching a stationary emergency or service vehicle with flashing lights, drivers must move over one lane if it is safe to do so. If changing lanes isn’t possible, motorists are required to slow down to a safe speed that allows them to stop if necessary.Local deputies say the rule is simple, but not everyone follows it — and that can have tragic consequences.
