3 hikers die on California mountain after 1 falls 500 feet

(KTLA) – Three hikers were found dead by rescue crews in the Devil’s Backbone area of Mt. Baldy after one of them, a 19-year-old man, fell about 500 feet, officials said Tuesday.

A search and rescue team responded to the Southern California peak around 11:30 a.m. Monday, after the 19-year-old’s hiking companion witnessed the fall and went to find cell service to call for help, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. A department spokesperson said they were not aware of any injuries to the friend at that time.

A sheriff’s Air Rescue team joined the search by helicopter and spotted the injured hiker along with two additional individuals nearby, but rescuers couldn’t retrieve them…
