One year ago, several towns and neighborhoods in Southern California were razed by devastating wildfires, including the deadly Eaton Fire, which was sparked on January 7. Although it was a deadly, fast-moving fire that upended millions of lives, many stories of selflessness, survival, and heroism provided a much-needed ray of hope. This is one of those stories.
When CBSLA news reporter Jasmine Viel and photographer John Scheiber were covering the Eaton Fire in the city of Altadena, they met a distraught pet mom named Evita Chu. With no firefighters in sight, there was no one to help her evacuate her pet ducks and chickens from their backyard enclosure, so this dedicated news team took matters into their own hands.
Now that it’s been an entire year since the fires, these local heroes are reconnecting with the birds and the bird mom whose lives they’ve changed for the better…
