2 hurt in explosion, fire in Southern California

A residence in Bell Gardens suffered an explosion and fire Tuesday evening.

The blast was reported a few minutes after 6 p.m. in the 6500 block of Purdy Avenue, the agency said.

On social media, the Fire Department characterized it as a two-story home on fire, though Paul Camacho, chief of the Bell Gardens Police Department, later said it was actually a small apartment building with three or four units.
