Strong peso hurting tourism south of the border, official says

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The Mexican peso has been strong against the U.S. dollar for more than a year, something seen as detrimental by Juan Coronado Ruíz, director with the Tourism and Conventions Committee of Tijuana.

Coronado Ruíz says since Americans can’t buy as much south of the border, so it prompts many to stay away from stores and restaurants in Tijuana and elsewhere in Baja California.

“We’re seeing a reduction in visits of up to 10 percent primarilly from Mexican-American tourists who live in Southern California,” he said.
