A routine evening meal turned tragic in October 2014 when an argument over home-cooked dinner escalated into violence at a San Bernardino residence. Trista Ann Spicer killed her boyfriend, Eric Mercado, during the confrontation and concealed his body in her backyard for nearly eight years. Eric Mercado, 42, expressed dissatisfaction with the beans and meat prepared by his girlfriend, Trista Ann Spicer. Tensions boiled over as he threw the food at her and demanded she sit naked on the couch, a form of control she later described in court. Spicer testified that Mercado then ordered her to fetch coffee, prompting her to grab a cast-iron skillet from the kitchen.[2][3]

She struck him multiple times in the head with the heavy pan before slashing his throat with a kitchen knife or box cutter. Prosecutors argued the attack occurred while Mercado slept on a loveseat, pointing to injuries consistent with an unsuspecting victim. Immediately after the killing, Spicer enlisted a friend to help wrap Mercado’s body in a deflated air mattress. They hid it in a cramped storage space beneath a concrete staircase in the backyard at her home on the 1400 block of East Davidson Street.
