ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The Roanoke Sheriff’s Office released a statement Thursday regarding an inmate death at the Roanoke City Detention Center (RCDC).

A scheduled medical round at the facility around 9:20 p.m. on Aug. 1 revealed an unresponsive person. First responders tried to revive the individual, who was later pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m.
Roanoke City Sheriff Antonio D. Hash said in-custody deaths are handled carefully and law enforcement take certain steps to mitigate the loss.
“First and foremost, any loss of life is tragic,” said Hash. “Whenever someone dies while in our custody, a family receives devastating news, a community seeks answers, and a group of deputies, medical personnel, and staff members are deeply affected by that loss.”…
