Roanoke’s Williamson Road pilot program cuts crashes by nearly 40%

ROANOKE, Va. – Since last fall, Roanoke has been piloting a new road layout on Williamson Road, between Pocahontas Avenue and Angell Avenue. Crews reduced the number of travel lanes and added a center turn lane, along with two bike lanes. The city says the goal is to slow drivers down, reduce crashes and make the road safer for everyone using the corridor.

The results, according to city officials, have been striking. Ross Campbell, Roanoke’s director of public works, says the numbers speak for themselves.

“Lots of good things happening at Williamson Road, but I don’t know as an engineer that I’ve ever seen something just so profound as a nearly 40 percent reduction just like that,” Campbell said…
