Rocky Mount officials and legislators disagree over funding for neighborhood, sometimes blocked by trains

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WDBJ) — Residents of Rocky Mount’s Highland Hills/Diamond Avenue neighborhood have one way in and out, and the entrance crosses railroad tracks. Delays caused by trains could leave residents stuck, and community members have joined with the NAACP to seek funding for a fix.

Sen. Bill Stanley (R-7) and Del. Will Davis (R-39) pushed for funding this year, but it was not included in the state budget. In a recent letter to a resident, Stanley said he was “surprised” the town had not done more than ask for money. He said Rocky Mount needs to design the project, commit local funds and apply for grants.

Stanley says town has not applied

Stanley said his office met with town leaders in Richmond in January, along with VDOT, housing officials and the gas company, to discuss next steps.

“If the town of Rocky Mount wants an extension, then it needs to fill out the applicable forms. It needs to go to the authorities in the state and make applications,” Stanley said. “The town has to make the applications.”…
