Cats continue to be a problem in Roanoke
Angels of Assisi recently rescued 16 dogs and 19 puppies from the cold in Monroe, which is admirable but in Roanoke cats and kittens were left in the freezing temperatures.
Roanoke City has a trapping service but citizens would have to do the trapping themselves. I was told by all 3 agencies last summer they were not picking up stray animals. The SPCA said they were full because many pet owners were giving up their pets. The organization is looking for other solutions besides pets being surrendered to the shelter.

Roaming cats are in danger and I have seen at least 4 felines dead in the streets during the past year after being hit by vehicles. I have been told by other Roanokers that stray cats are across Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest and citizens don’t know what to do.
As long as pet owners turn in their dogs and cats and shelters cannot take strays this problem will remain. Those who survive the weather, being hit by vehicles, and other dangers like dogs and cat haters will be around in the spring and eating season will result in even more.
