Friends of Washington Park must raise the funds to save the Evans Cottage without City assistance

The Evans cottage does not have to be moved

The City of Roanoke initially stated they would have to demolish the Evans Cottage to build a new swimming pool on the lower level of Washington Park ( per Historic Preservation). Concerned citizens protested saying the caretaker’s cottage has historical value in the Black community.

Roanoek City now says they can add the pool without removing the cottage but there is a twist. The Roanoke Rambler says the age of the Evans House has it in such a dilapidated condition that it might fall apart before it can be stabilized. Those who opposed saving the cottage have been saying all along the building is too old and in such bad shape that it should be torn down.

The Rambler quoted Allison Blanton from the Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation who said “I am concerned that during construction — and right now just exposure to the elements — that it will become more deteriorated,”
