Virginians should be vigilant
The Spoofing scam has been reported in the Commonwealth so all Virginians should be on guard against this tactic. Readers Digest reveals the following.
A spoofing scam might be an email, text message or phone call that appears to be from a trusted source, like a loved one or even a popular brand. But in reality, a fraudster is behind the fake email address or phone number, hoping to convince you to download malicious software, send money or share personal information or data with them.
Don’t respond to suspicious phone calls, texts, or emails
ABC News reports that Bedford, Virginia residents have been receiving phone calls that show up on caller ID as the Bedford Police Department. The Bedford PD said on their Facebook page that their officers will never call anyone asking for money or issuing threats.
Virginians should keep this in mind and be vigilant against suspicious phone calls, texts, or emails. The best recourse is not to answer the phone, open the email, or click on the text if you suspect something is off.
