ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) — It’s been a yearly event since 2006. “Soup for Seniors” is a tradition for the community as they come together to collect things like soup, peanut butter, canned fruits, and vegetables to give to seniors in our community.
The drive is hosted by the Local Office on Aging. This year, they had over 10 sites for the food drives throughout the Roanoke Valley. Collections at those sites ended on Sunday, Feb. 4, but collections at the main office will continue until the sixth.
The CEO and President of the Local Office on Aging, Ron Boyd tells WFXR that the drive serves as an opportunity to collect food for the elderly in our community at a time when the weather is colder, gas prices increase, and the cost of food rises.
“Of course, our area, 1 and 4 are already over the age of 65, and by early 2030, that’s going to be 1 and 3. So, the population in our area is aging, so there’s a greater need than ever,” said Boyd.
