Extreme humidity in Virginia is different than high temperatures

Humidity caught me off guard

On Saturday, I learned firsthand the difference between high temperatures and high humidity. I heard it talked about on the news but had never had an extreme experience before until now.

I attended a Salem Red Sox game where it was 92 degrees, but I felt no discomfort. The air was fresh and clean, sitting high up on the bleachers. I had water, Gatorade, and sunflower seeds so I would not become dehydrated, and a gentle breeze blew a few times.

Humidity prevent breathing clean air

When I returned to Roanoke and opened the car door, it was as if someone had put their hand over my nose. The humidity was thick, and it was hard to breathe. It was as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of the atmosphere and I was suffocating.

Outdoors smelled like the 4th of July when everyone had set off fireworks. In 66 years of living on this earth, I had never experienced anything like this but at least now I understand what the meteorologists were warning about.
