Virginia native travels with a giant cross to spread the Gospel and assist the homeless

Several people have taken up their cross for Christ

Decades ago, there was an older white male who would walk with a cross in Downtown Roanoke. News Herald shared a story about a man named Chuck carrying a cross, but I’m not sure this is the same person. Virginia native Nick Shindler is currently taking up the mantle of cross-carrying.

According to his Facebook page, Schindler is the pastor of Redemption Railroad. He has been traveling on foot across the US and is now on the West Coast, carrying a 75-pound cross to emphasize the love of Christ and the importance of bearing one another’s burdens.

Shindler looks out for the homeless

KSL reveals Schindler also raises awareness of and donates to the homeless. is personal because He shared that this is personal for him because he was unsheltered from ages 18 to 24. He emphasizes how difficult it is to obtain a job when you don’t have an address and cannot take a shower.

He credits a manager of a Subway in Florida with taking a chance on him and giving him a job. His goal is to walk through every US state, sharing the love of Christ and offering assistance to those without homes.
