Virginia Tech Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones (1) is pressed by Rutgers Scarlet Knights defensive back Desmond Igbinosun (4) during the second quarter at Lane Stadium.

Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones did not have a great first half against Rutgers on Saturday, with his team going into the break facing a 16-7 deficit. Contributing to that deficit was a safety by the Rutgers defense with two minutes to play in the half.

It was not really a run-of-the-mill safety, either.

As Drones dropped back to pass in his own end zone, he was knocked to the ground by his own pass-blocker and then just heaved the ball backward over his head, through the end zone, and off the field of play.

The whole thing was just a comedy of errors. Virginia Tech was able to overcome that, however, and tied the game with two touchdowns and two two-point conversions in the fourth quarter. The Hokies ended up losing 26-23.

Drones is a second-year starter for the Hokies and threw 17 touchdowns to only three interceptions in his first year as the team’s starting quarterback a year ago.
