Butter and sugar on white bread was delicious

Brown Sugar Toast is delicious, but decades ago, two slices of white bread with butter and white sugar made a sandwich that many Virginia baby boomers and those from the silent generation enjoyed.

Children who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, like C. Johnson from Botetourt County, will recall eating a butter and sugar sandwich after school. Just thinking about it might bring the taste back to your mouth if it was a staple in your Virginia homes.

Toasted or plain bread?

Most people used plain white bread, but J. Leftwich, an older senior who grew up in Botetourt and now lives in Roanoke, says her mother was different. Her mom first toasted “light bread” in the oven of their old cook stove.

She then added butter and sprinkled sugar on top. Leftwich says she can still recall the smell of burning sugar that fell into the oven. Butter, sugar, and bread sandwiches originated in Italy but eventually made their way to the US.
