Roanoke drivers should obey speed limits
WDBJ reports that an unidentified pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run near Williamson Road on Friday. I have noticed drivers stepping up rather than slowing down on Williamson and other streets when pedestrians cross.
On Orange Avenue at 11th Street NW, my grandchildren and I counted 40 cars one day that did not allow pedestrians to cross even though the lights were blinking. One man began crossing anyway, which was not wise, but he made it.
Roanoke Drivers should be mindful at crosswalks
WSLS reported a hit-and-run this summer where a pedestrian was killed. WDBJ reported a child and an adult were hurt in a hit-and-run. I have seen vehicles speed up behind me and other drivers and pass on the wrong side of the road.
What is most troubling is watching drivers speed up from blocks away when pedestrians are at crosswalks. Seniors can cross slower than others, and courtesy should be extended to all. Slowing down and obeying the speed limit saves lives. Allowing pedestrians the right of way saves lives.
