Virginia Cold Weather Alert: Wind Chills as Low as -15° to Hit Blacksburg Through Thursday

Blacksburg, VA – Arctic air is gripping Virginia this week, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills as low as -15°F to southwest areas, including Blacksburg and neighboring counties. Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions lasting through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph will create extreme wind chill values west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Blacksburg and nearby towns will experience temperatures in the teens during the day, with overnight lows plunging to the single digits or below zero. An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, with wind chills possibly dropping to -20°F.

Frostbite and hypothermia are serious risks if precautions are not taken. Residents should limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and wear gloves, hats, and face masks when exposed to the cold.
