A brighter Sunday followed by a winter storm

Rest of the weekend and a look ahead to next week

ROANOKE, Va. – A weak disturbance will move overhead tonight, providing us the chance for more showers, especially in the mountains. The chance for rain is much lower farther east. The timing of this is roughly from mid-to-late evening through about 4a. Sunday looks dry all day…good news for any Super Bowl parties you may attend. Partly to mostly sunny skies are in the forecast and it will be breezy with some gusts up to 20-30 mph possible. Temperatures will reach the 40s and 50s to close out the weekend.

Monday may see a few showers early in the day south of 460. A light wintry mix cannot be ruled out for a short period of time as well. Otherwise, Monday will be partly sunny and colder. The real event arrives late Monday night and lasts into late Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. And that looks to be a winter storm. It’s not going to be all snow…it’s not going to be all ice. But, we are looking at more snow north and more mixing take place farther south. This looks to be a high impact event, with slick roads and school closures a good bet. Another storm system will come in on the heels of this one. And while a wintry mix is possible at times late Wednesday into Wednesday night (especially in the mountains), this is mainly a chilly rain for most of us through Thursday. But, with this additional precipitation, our flood risk will no doubt be elevated as this secondary storm system moves through the area. We should dry out on Friday.

Temperatures will hit the 40s on Monday, but will fail to make it out of the 30s on Tuesday and Wednesday. We should climb into the 40s and 50s late in the week…
