Smith Mountain American Association of University Women awards local college students 2025-2026 scholarships

Five local students each received scholarships at the May 17 Smith Mountain American Association ofUniversity Women Scholarship Luncheon. The Scholarship Committee honored these women from our tri-county area as they continue studies in their chosen fields.

Four of the recipients were each awarded $5000 scholarships. Ashley Barcenas-Olvera (Franklin County) is a rising sophomore majoring in Elementary Education at Ferrum College; Olivia Chitwood (Franklin County) is a rising sophomore majoring in Marine Science and Business Administration, minoring in Spanish and Graphic Design at Eckerd College; Sarah Gillespie (Franklin County) is a rising sophomore majoring in Finance and minoring in Economics Expression REAL Studies at Radford University; Madelyn Shelton (Bedford County) is a rising sophomore majoring in Environmental Conservation and Marine and CoastalSciences. Madelyn is entering College of William and Mary from a Dual Enrollment program through Brookville High School and Central Virginia Community College (2025).
