ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The Virginia State Police and Better Business Bureau (BBB) are warning of a new smishing scam involving people pretending to be from the DMV collecting on false tickets.
If you have received a text about an overdue traffic ticket from someone claiming to be from the DMV, it is likely a scam, according to VSP and the BBB.
“The DMV will never send you text messages demanding payment for fines or fees,” said DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey. “We urge our customers to be vigilant and avoid sending their personal information via text.”
