SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. (WSET) — As temperatures rise, Smith Mountain Lake is proving to be a safe haven for swimmers this summer, thanks to the diligent efforts of local volunteers.
Each year, a dedicated team of 50 volunteers from the Smith Mountain Lake Association collects water samples from 84 locations around the lake. These samples are then analyzed at Ferrum College for water clarity, chlorophyll, and phosphorus levels.
Keri Green, vice president of the Smith Mountain Lake Association, said, “Clarity is good. Phosphorus is good, water temperatures have climbed very slowly this year. It’s been a nice year for good water quality.”…
