ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The City of Roanoke is under an Extreme Heat Watch and residents are urged to be aware of the rising temperatures, with local cooling centers available to help.
According to National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Roanoke will be under and Extreme Heat Watch over the next several days.
Consider the following for cooling center location and hours of operation:
Lynchburg opens cooling centers, offers free rides
- Belmont Presbyterian Church: Open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday
- The Hope Center: Open until 6:00 PM; offering water and snacks in the courtyard.
- The Salvation Army Roanoke: Open 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM Monday through Friday
- Roanoke Public Libraries can also be a great place to get out of the heat and enjoy a new read.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg encourages people to stay cool as hot conditions can cause heat related illnesses. Here are some tips:
- Seek shade and take breaks from the heat
- Dress in light colored, or loose fitting clothing
- Drink lots of water
- Don’t leave pets for kids in vehicles
- Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day
