The Mill Mountain Zoobilee celebrates its 73rd birthday and names their baby sloth

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – A lot has changed at Roanoke’s Mill Mountain Zoo since it was founded in 1952. When it first opened, it was a children’s zoo with a fairy tale theme and mother goose-inspired cages.

Now, 73 years later, it is a more modern facility designed for the whole family with heavy consideration for the animal’s comfort in mind.

Niki Voudren, Executive Director at The Mill Mountain Zoo, said, “We’re accredited by the Zoological Association of America, which means we have upheld the highest national standards of animal welfare, ethics, and safety. We’re also governed by the USDA, so we are a good zoo and all of our animal residents are either critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, threatened, or injured and non-releasable.”…
