ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Independence Day may be on Friday, but Roanoke kicked off the weekend on Thursday with the Freedom Festival at River’s Edge Park.
The event is put on by the Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department, and attendees get through the gate free of charge.
“As Parks and Rec, we run a service, and our goal is to offer these free community events throughout the year,” said Roanoke Parks and Recreation events coordinator Tim Pohlad-Thomas. “This is one of them. Go Fest is another in October. Our goal is to provide a service and give people an opportunity to get out and enjoy the parks we take care of.”
