Roanoke honors Booker T. Washington Park with proclamation on 102nd anniversary

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – A hometown park is celebrating over a century of history, growth and tradition with a special gift from Roanoke City leaders to celebrate its birthday.

Welcoming the community back in 1923, the Booker T. Washington Park, more commonly known now as Washington Park, was the first park for Black residents during segregation.

“It just has so much rich history,” said Cathy Carter, President of the Friends of Washington Park. “When they purchased that land this park became a park for African Americans, this was their safe haven.”…
