Ensure a safe summer barbecue: Handwashing tips from local health districts

(WFXR) – The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts are offering some tips to enjoy your summer barbecue and stay safe and healthy!

According to the Food and Drug Administration, handwashing is a must when handling food to prevent foodborne illnesses and contamination.

The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts recommend the following handwashing tips:

  1. Wet: Use clean, running water and apply soap.
  2. Lather: Rub your hands together, scrub all parts—backs of hands, between fingers, under nails.
  3. Scrub: Do this for at least 20 seconds (hum “Happy Birthday” twice!).
  4. Rinse: Use clean, running water.
  5. Dry: Use a clean towel or air dry.
