Members of the Buckingham Middle School FFA Chapter competed in several competitions June 9-12, at the 99th Virginia FFA State Convention held on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. FFA competitions are designed to use knowledge and skills the competitors have learned in their Agricultural Education courses. This year there were four teams from the middle school that competed. The members spent many hours outside of class practicing and preparing for their contest.
The Plant Science contest is designed to introduce students to the growth process and development of plants used in the agricultural and horticultural industries. Team members Peyton O’Bryant, Joanna Carter, Kaylee Staton and Jackson Harris placed fourth overall. Individually Jackson placed 12th and Kaylee placed 13th.
The Agriscience Technology Mechanics event challenges students to explain and demonstrate safety practices, read and interpret directions, identify and use basic woodworking hand tools, select and use measuring devices, perform measuring skills, and solve problems.
