Buses return to Roanoke County roads; county urges drivers to be aware

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Starting Thursday morning, August 14, buses will be returning to Roanoke County roads and the county is asking for drivers to be fully aware and to give space as well as look out for stopped buses, according to Roanoke County Public Schools (RCPS).

During the morning and afternoon will be the peak times that school buses will be transporting children. While following buses, drivers should give about 20 feet or more space between them and a bus. Drivers should not only be prepared for the stop and go that a bus will do, but they must obey all traffic laws to guarantee the safety of children, the RCPS said.

Virginia law mandates that motorists are must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights that is loading and unloading children, whether the driver is approaching a bus from the opposite direction or following a bus. Drivers must stay stopped until all children are clear of the roadway, the flashing red lights go away, and the bus starts coasting forward.
