Bedford secures funding for new Amtrak stop after 50 years

BEDFORD, Va. (WSET) — After more than 50 years, passenger trains will once again stop in Bedford. The town’s rail station, which closed in 1971, is set to be revived.

The town accepted a grant of nearly $1.5 million; the funds will be used for an environmental study and to cover 30 percent of the design phase, with the town contributing $375,000. Bedford has two years to complete these steps.

Mary Zirkle, the director of planning and community development for Bedford, expressed enthusiasm about the project. “We’re not asking again for something that we haven’t had, just to bring people back to Bedford. Again, connect people outside of the community,” she said…
