Crews respond to four-alarm fire in Salem, conducted ‘rural water supply operations’

SALAM, Va. (WFXR)- Investigators with the Roanoke County Fire Marshals Office are working to determine the cause of a house fire that happened Thursday night.

According to the Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department, they along with Roanoke County Fire and Rescue, Fort Lewis Fire Department, and Mason’s Cove Volunteer Fire Department responded to the home in the 1300 block of Goodwin Avenue.

Firefighters said they had to conduct “rural water supply operations” because the closet hydrant was too far away. Crews working the fire on the second floor had to retreat from the interior of the home due deteriorating roof conditions.
