Salem police investigate potential hoax threat to schools

SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – A spokesperson for the City of Salem says all city schools were placed in Secure Mode on Wednesday, Sept. 3, after the Salem Police Department received an unspecified threat toward local schools.

Officials say the schools were placed in Secure Mode, where all students and staff are inside the building and all exterior doors are locked, out of an “abundance of caution.”

According to a statement shared with families by Curtis Hicks, superintendent of Salem City Schools, the initial investigation indicates that this threat is likely a hoax, and similar reports have been made in neighboring school divisions…
