ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WDBJ) – A month into the new school year, Franklin County Public Schools is still looking to hire more bus drivers. Like other school divisions nationwide, FCPS is facing a driver shortage.
The school division is seven drivers short of being fully staffed. It has ramped up its recruitment efforts to attract more drivers. In the meantime, the school division is doing what it can to adjust to the shortage, taking steps like consolidating routes on certain days if a driver has to call out.
“We already have all of our spare drivers running regular routes because of the shortage; there is no one to call in to be a sub driver. So we have to make adjustments and sometimes double up routes, sometimes have a driver run an additional route, which causes students to arrive a little later or get home a little later in the afternoon,” said Franklin County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kevin Siers…
