Virginia Weather Alert: Rain, Cooler Temps Expected Midweek

Blacksburg, VA – Southwest Virginia residents should prepare for a shift in weather this week, with showers and storms expected to return by midweek and temperatures trending cooler toward the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a slow-moving upper-level low pressure system will bring unsettled conditions across the region beginning Wednesday, September 24. Rain chances climb sharply midweek, with Boone, NC seeing up to a 70% chance of precipitation, while many Virginia communities including Roanoke, Lynchburg, and South Boston face 55–65% chances Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures will also fall as the wet weather sets in. Early in the week, highs reach the mid-to-upper 80s in cities such as Danville, South Boston, and Roanoke. By Thursday and Friday, however, most areas—including Blacksburg, Lexington, and Wytheville—will see highs only in the low 70s.
