BLACKSBURG, Va. — A sharp chill is sweeping across southwest Virginia tonight as temperatures plunge into the 30s and lower 40s, with the coldest valleys nearing the freezing mark by early Friday morning.
Freeze Watch in Effect
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Freeze Watch for Greenbrier and Bath counties, warning residents that frost and subfreezing temperatures could damage crops, gardens, and exposed plumbing.
Meteorologists say a high-pressure system over New York is pushing clear skies and calm winds into the region, setting up ideal conditions for rapid overnight cooling.
Areas Most at Risk
The coldest temperatures are expected along and north of the I-64 corridor, where frost will likely form in sheltered valleys and open rural areas. Drivers traveling along I-64 or U.S. 220 should also watch for reduced visibility from patchy frost near dawn.
Residents in the Greenbrier Valley and Alleghany Highlands are urged to cover sensitive vegetation, wrap exposed pipes, and bring pets indoors overnight.
Weekend Outlook
Friday will bring slightly warmer air, but another cold morning is expected Saturday before temperatures begin to rebound. Highs will return to the low 60s by the weekend and upper 60s to low 70s early next week…
