The American Chestnut Foundation is planting 150 American chestnuts in Bedford this weekend, to bring the species back

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The American Chestnut Foundation is working to bring the American Chestnut species back. This weekend, they’ll be in Bedford county planting them, and they need your help.

The American Chestnut used dominate Appalachia, with an estimated four billion of these trees at its peak. The wood wouldn’t rot, so it was used for everything.

“People would say that this was the tree that would take them from their cradle to their graves,” Cassie Stark, the Mid Atlantic Regional Science Coordinator with the American Chestnut Foundation, said. “People would make literally everything out of it, including baby cradles and then their coffins. Then, obviously that’s a money maker, timber. So we have value and then economic drive there.”…
