Community honors domestic violence victim 20 years after tragedy that sparked change

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – October is a Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to remember those affected and raise awareness for prevention and support.

Statistics show one in four women and one in nine men experience domestic violence in their lifetimes. One of those lives was Sabrina Reed, a mother, nurse and sister whose death 20 years ago inspired lasting change in the Roanoke Valley.

Reed lost her life in 2005 during a child custody exchange with her husband, a tragedy that inspired the creation of Sabrina’s Place, the region’s only secure, supervised visitation and exchange center for families affected by domestic violence.
