Local officials expect busy travel week ahead of Thanksgiving holiday

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Millions of people across the country will spend the next week traveling somewhere for Thanksgiving. In Virginia, law enforcement will have a heightened presence on patrol.

More than half of the fatal crashes over the last two Thanksgiving holidays involved someone not wearing their seatbelt, including six of eight one year ago. Virginia State Police (VSP) public relations coordinator Matthew Demlein said preventing that will be a primary focus this year.

“It’s the law now, no matter where you’re seated,” he said. “I know previously, it was only the law if you were under 18 or if you were sitting in the front seat, but that changed in July, so this Thanksgiving, as compared to all previous Thanksgivings, no matter where you are in the vehicle, if you’re not buckled up, you can be ticketed for not wearing your seatbelt.”…
