LewisGale swaps out 30-year rehab car in major renovation move

ROANOKE, VA. (WFXR) – A fourth-floor car swap isn’t something you see every day at a hospital.But at LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, it’s a crucial part of modernizing the rehab experience.

Crews removed a decades-old 1988 Chevy Nova from the inpatient gym, a vehicle patients have been using for more than 30 years.

“We practice with patients getting in and out of the vehicle, which is imperative for them to be able to go home and be able to function in their community,” said Elise Manning, program director for inpatient rehab.

The Nova was originally installed in 1992 as part of a community-reintegration space known as “Easy Street.”…
