Blacksburg remembers Chief Fred Linkous, a lifelong servant who shaped generations of first responders

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – The Blacksburg community is mourning the loss of Chief Fred Linkous, a man colleagues say dedicated his entire life to serving and protecting others.

Chief Linkous spent 54 years with the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, becoming a cornerstone of the region’s fire service. His influence stretched far beyond the town limits, reaching firefighters across Virginia through decades of advocacy, leadership, and mentorship.

“It was very sudden and very shocking to all of us on the department and family as well,” said Todd Jones with the Blacksburg Fire Department. “We are mourning his loss and his legacy.”…
